Hexi Cashmere
The Hexi Cashmere goat is a Chinese cashmere-producing goat associated with the Hexi Corridor of Gansu, a cold, dry region between mountains and desert. It is selected for the fine undercoat that can be combed or collected for cashmere, while still serving as a meat and farm animal. The breed's value comes from adaptation to harsh seasonal range, efficient grazing, and fiber quality rather than from a decorative coat alone.
Managing Hexi Cashmere goats means protecting both animal condition and fleece value. They need enough nutrition before and after winter, shelter from severe storms, and handling systems that allow combing, sorting, and record keeping without excessive stress. Breeders track fiber weight, fineness, color, kidding success, and body soundness together, because a goat that produces soft fiber but fails to thrive on local range will not serve a cashmere flock well.
