Hongtong
The Hongtong is a local Chinese goat associated with Hongtong County and nearby parts of Shanxi. It belongs to the practical farm-goat tradition of northern China rather than to an international show or dairy registry. Animals are described as hardy, medium-sized goats kept under village conditions, with variable coat colors and the normal horned, agile build of Capra hircus. The breed name is sometimes transliterated as Hongdong, reflecting the county name.
Flocks are typically managed for meat, household milk, skins, and manure in mixed crop-livestock systems on the Loess Plateau. Browse, crop residues, and seasonal grazing are important, so thriftiness and sound feet matter more than uniform color. For conservation or sourcing, the useful question is whether animals trace to the Hongtong or Shanxi population; outside China the name may be hard to verify and should not be confused with general crossbred goats.
