Kalahari Red
The Kalahari Red is a red-coated meat goat developed in southern Africa and selected for hardiness, mothering ability, and performance under hot, extensive conditions. It is related in purpose to other meat breeds but is recognized for its solid red coloring, strong frame, and practical browsing ability. The coat color can also help animals blend into dry rangeland, though production traits matter more than color by itself.
In meat herds, Kalahari Reds are used where easy-care kidding, growth on browse, and tolerance of heat are important. They still require good fencing, clean water, mineral support, hoof attention, and parasite monitoring, especially outside the dry environments that shaped them. Buyers should look for structural soundness, functional teats, scrotal quality, and real performance records rather than assuming every red goat has the same breeding value.
