Laoshan
The Laoshan goat is a Chinese dairy breed associated with Laoshan and Qingdao in Shandong Province. It developed from local goats improved with imported dairy stock, especially Saanen-type animals, followed by selection for milk production under the coastal hill conditions of eastern China. Animals are usually medium to large framed with dairy depth, a straight or slightly dished profile, and alert ears. Coats are often white or cream in dairy herds, with some regional variation. The name may also appear as Laoshan dairy goat in agricultural references.
Laoshan goats are managed mainly as milk animals for household and regional dairy use, so udder soundness, milking temperament, and lactation records matter more than show color. They work in systems where good forage is supplemented with grain during late pregnancy and peak milk, and they need dry bedding in humid weather to protect feet and udders. Outside their home region, prospective keepers should confirm that goats labeled Laoshan come from traceable breeding stock, because the name is not widely standardized internationally.
