Norwegian
The Norwegian goat usually refers to Norway's native dairy goat population, shaped by cold weather, steep pasture, and the country's long tradition of goat milk and brown whey cheese production. Animals are often sturdy, active, and well suited to summer grazing in rough landscapes. Coat color and horn status can vary by line, while the central purpose remains efficient milk production under northern conditions.
Norwegian goats need management that supports both movement and milk. Good forage, shelter from wet cold, hoof care, and careful transition between barn feeding and pasture are important. In dairy herds, records for milk yield, components, udder health, and kidding interval guide selection. Outside Norway, buyers should ask whether the goats are true Norwegian dairy stock, crossbred animals, or simply goats with a similar hardy appearance.
