Orobica
The Orobica goat is an Italian alpine breed from the Bergamo Alps and nearby valleys of Lombardy. It is a strong mountain goat, often seen with long horns, a relatively long coat, and a frame suited to steep pasture. Orobica goats are tied to local dairy traditions, including milk used for regional cheeses, and they represent the kind of breed shaped by terrain as much as by formal selection.
Keepers should expect an active goat that benefits from turnout, browse, and firm footing. Hoof care, shelter from prolonged wet weather, and mineral balance are important, especially when the goats are moved away from alpine grazing. Breeding should preserve hardiness, udder function, and regional type instead of selecting only for dramatic horns. For conservation herds, source records and avoidance of casual crossing help protect a local Italian genetic resource.
