Pinzgauer
The Pinzgauer goat is a regional Austrian goat associated with the Pinzgau area, better known internationally for cattle but also home to alpine small-ruminant traditions. As a goat entry, it is best treated as a local mountain type with dairy and household utility rather than a widely commercial breed. Animals are expected to be hardy, sure-footed, and suited to seasonal grazing in cool, steep country.
For keepers, the main value of Pinzgauer goats lies in adaptation to mountain management: turnout, browse, strong feet, and efficient use of forage. They need dry shelter, hoof care, mineral balance, and careful winter feeding when pasture is limited. Because public breed information can be sparse, source records are important. Breeders should preserve the regional line through functional selection instead of relying on the name alone as proof of type.
