Sokoto Red
Red Sokoto goats, often called Sokoto Red or Maradi in parts of Niger, are a West African goat breed associated with northern Nigeria and the dry savanna belt. They are usually small to medium in size, fine-boned, short-coated, and red to chestnut in color. The breed is used for meat, household milk, and especially for its high-quality skins, historically prized in fine leather production. Its value comes as much from thriftiness and reproductive efficiency as from size.
These goats suit hot, seasonal environments where herds browse shrubs, crop residues, and rough grazing. In wetter or more intensive systems, good drainage, hoof trimming, and parasite control become more important than they might be on open dry range. People buying Sokoto Red stock should not expect a large Boer-type carcass; the practical strengths are adaptability, kidding performance, and the red skin trait that can be diluted by careless crossbreeding.
