Zhiwulin Black
The Zhiwulin black goat is a Chinese local goat type associated with the Ziwuling or Zhiwulin hill country of the Loess Plateau region. As the name suggests, dark or black coats are an important identifying feature, although local farm populations may show some variation. It is generally kept as a hardy meat goat, selected for survival on hilly browse, seasonal forage, and cold winters rather than for a single intensive production trait. The breed represents the kind of regional Capra hircus population shaped by landscape and household management over many generations.
Practical management centers on grazing and browsing without overusing fragile hillsides. Rotational use of slopes, winter forage reserves, and simple shelters can make a large difference to kid survival and body condition. Selection is usually directed toward growth, reproductive performance, black coat consistency, and ability to travel rough ground. For breeders and conservation programs, documented origin is useful because black goats from different Chinese regions may look similar while carrying different local adaptations.
