Golden Metallic Stag Beetle
Cyclommatus metallifer
The golden metallic stag beetle, Cyclommatus metallifer, is an Indonesian stag beetle known for the extraordinary jaws of large males. The body has a bronze or coppery metallic sheen, and the male's slender mandibles can approach the length of the rest of the body. Females are smaller and have short jaws.
Breeding produces eggs, wood-feeding larvae, pupae and adults. Successful laboratory cultures use decaying wood flakes, with larger larval containers allowing larger males to develop. Adults need climbing surfaces and a suitable soft fruit or beetle-jelly diet.
