Emporda Goose
The Emporda goose, often written Empordà goose or Oca de l'Empordà in Catalan, is a local domestic goose from the Empordà region of northeastern Catalonia. It comes from farmyard stock kept around grain fields, orchards, wetlands, and village holdings rather than from a global commercial line. The breed is generally described as a medium to heavy goose with a practical table-bird build, orange bill and legs, and mostly white or lightly marked plumage, though details can vary among small populations.
Management suits Mediterranean mixed farming: grazing when pasture is available, shade and fresh water in hot weather, and secure night housing against predators. Emporda geese are of interest to regional breeders and rare-breed keepers because they represent Catalan poultry heritage. Anyone sourcing them should work from known local lines and avoid confusing them with ordinary white geese or imported heavy breeds. Selection usually emphasizes fertility, sound legs, good growth, and the ability to raise goslings in outdoor systems, not extreme size alone.
