Euskal Antzara Goose
Euskal Antzara means Basque goose, and the name is used for a traditional domestic goose of the Basque Country in northern Spain. It is a regional farm breed shaped by wet Atlantic weather, smallholdings, pastures, and household meat production. Many descriptions place it in the medium-sized, greylag-type group, with grey, white, or pied markings, orange bill and legs, and an active build suited to grazing. Because it is a local breed with recovery and conservation interest, appearance may be less uniform than in long-established show strains.
In practice, Euskal Antzara geese are kept in small breeding groups on grass, with shelter from driving rain, clean drinking and bathing water, and safe nighttime confinement. Their value is strongest for Basque heritage flocks, educational farms, and breeders who want to maintain regional genetics. Source matters: similar saddleback or grey farm geese should not be assumed to be Euskal Antzara without a known line. Breeding choices should favor vigor, fertility, calm handling where possible, and the outdoor hardiness expected of geese from a damp, variable climate.
