Javakhetian Goose
Javakhetian goose is a Georgian domestic goose landrace named for Javakheti, the high plateau region of the southern Caucasus. Flocks in this area have traditionally been shaped by village selection rather than a single international breed standard, so birds may vary in size, build, and feather color. The type is generally discussed as a hardy farm goose adapted to cool upland conditions, with usefulness for household meat, eggs, feathers, and grazing on rough grass.
Management of Javakhetian geese is closest to low-input smallholder goose keeping: access to pasture during the growing season, a secure shed at night, and reliable water for drinking and head washing. In cold districts, shelter from drafts and deep, dry bedding are more important than heating for healthy adult birds. Conservation-minded keepers should avoid selecting only for the largest carcasses, because local adaptation, broodiness, and ability to thrive on village forage are part of the landrace's value.
