Kars Goose
Kars goose is a traditional Turkish domestic goose from Kars and neighboring highland areas of northeastern Turkey, where cold winters and open grazing have shaped local poultry keeping. The name is also associated with regional food traditions centered on goose meat. Birds are usually medium to large farm geese, commonly seen in white, gray, or pied patterns rather than a single exhibition color, and the type is valued for meat, down, and use of village pastures through the short growing season.
Kars geese are often raised in semi-extensive systems: goslings grow on grass in spring and summer, then receive more grain as weather worsens or finishing begins. They need secure housing against dogs, foxes, and severe winter wind, but healthy adults handle cold better than damp, dirty confinement. Buyers should distinguish locally sourced Kars stock from ordinary mixed geese sold under a regional name, especially when purchasing birds for breeding or cultural food production.
