Kartuzy Landrace
Kartuzy landrace refers to a Polish regional goose population from the Kartuzy area of Kashubia in northern Poland. In Polish usage it may be seen as the Kartuska goose, one of several native goose lines maintained for genetic diversity and small farm traits. These geese are not defined mainly by decorative color; they are practical domestic geese shaped by local selection for grazing ability, seasonal reproduction, maternal behavior, and meat suitable for household or regional markets.
Conservation and breeding flocks usually focus on keeping families distinct, avoiding unplanned crossing with commercial white geese, and preserving the landrace's adaptation to Polish farm conditions. Pasture, access to water for bathing or at least head washing, and dry night housing are central to welfare, especially during the wet autumn finishing period common in goose production. Buyers should ask whether birds come from a recognized conservation flock or from backyard birds that only resemble the landrace.
