Kholmogory Goose
Kholmogory goose is a large Russian domestic goose breed with a long history in the north and center of European Russia. It is often described as a heavy meat goose, commonly white, gray, or gray-and-white, with a strong body, deep chest, and in many lines a knob at the base of the bill and a dewlap under the throat. The breed likely reflects old Russian farm geese influenced by Chinese-type geese, which helps explain its head and neck features.
Because Kholmogory geese are substantial birds, breeding stock needs room to move, firm footing, and careful attention to leg soundness and mating condition. They are better suited to pasture-based meat production and farmyard breeding than to very high egg output; fertility can suffer if birds become too fat. Keepers in cold climates appreciate their hardiness, but goslings still need dry brooding and protection from chilling. When buying, look for healthy structure rather than the biggest knob or heaviest bird.
