Smålen Goose
The Smålen goose is a Norwegian heritage goose connected with the Smålenene district, an older name for parts of southeastern Norway. It represents a local farm goose adapted to northern conditions, modest-scale production, and grazing-based management. Like many Scandinavian livestock resources, its value is tied to regional history as much as to any single visible trait, although flocks may show the familiar gray, white, or pied patterns of domestic geese.
Modern Smålen goose keeping is largely a preservation exercise. Breeders should keep lines distinct, document origin, and select for hardy birds that breed reliably without losing the traditional farm type. They need shelter against cold rain and winter weather, but they also benefit from outdoor range and forage. Buyers should ask whether the birds come from a maintained Norwegian line or from a general mixed goose flock, because the name is only meaningful when the ancestry has been protected.
