Zatory Landrace
The Zatory landrace, or Zatorska goose, is a Polish regional goose developed around Zator in Lesser Poland. It descends from local geese maintained in the upper Vistula basin and is generally treated as a conservation breed rather than a commercial hybrid. Birds are medium-sized, usually white, with orange bills and legs, and were valued for table carcasses, grazing ability, and adaptation to traditional low-input farms with meadows and water access.
Today Zatory geese are kept by preservation flocks, small farms, and research or breeding programs that maintain old Polish poultry genetics. They do best with pasture, secure housing, and controlled breeding groups so the landrace does not disappear into general white farm geese. Buyers should look for breeder records or conservation-flock ties, since the name refers to regional ancestry as much as outward appearance. Slow, steady growth and reliable natural behavior are usually more important than rapid finishing.
