Great Crested Newt
Triturus cristatus
The great crested newt lives in ponds and surrounding woodland and grassland across much of Europe. Its dark, warty skin has white side speckles, while the orange belly carries irregular black blotches. Breeding males have a jagged back crest and a pale tail stripe. Females fold aquatic leaves around single eggs. Experienced keepers provide cool water for breeding and damp land refuges outside that phase. It is more robust than the Danube crested newt. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
