Great Plains Toad
Anaxyrus cognatus
This burrowing toad occurs across much of central North America and is maintained by specialist amphibian keepers. Large, pale-edged dark patches cover its brown or gray back. Ground-level enclosures need loose substrate, sheltered moist retreats, clean water and suitable invertebrate prey. Females lay strings of eggs in temporary water after seasonal rains, and the larvae develop in pools. Its bold paired back patches distinguish it from the more evenly mottled Texas toad.
