Peruvian
The Peruvian guinea pig has a long, flowing coat with two rump rosettes that direct hair forward over the head. A full frontal covers the face, and the hair around the sides and rear forms a continuous curtain. This separates it from the silkie or sheltie, whose face remains visible beneath hair directed backward. The Peruvian is recognized in ARBA's Standard of Perfection for 2026 to 2030. It has a British Cavy Council Full Standard, with the current Peruvian Varieties Cavy Club standard updated in 2024, and is included in the European longhair standard.
British show guidance permits any color or mixture of colors and emphasizes coat density, texture, an even outline and the position of the rump rosettes. Exhibition coats are presented with a central parting on a show board. Daily grooming keeps the long hair clean and helps prevent tangles and matting. The Peruvian Satin is a separate ARBA breed that adds a satin sheen to the same general coat form.
