Harlequin Poison Frog
Oophaga histrionica
This variable poison frog inhabits Colombia's Pacific forests and is bred by experienced specialists. The Bahia Solano form shown has a black body with red-orange spots; other populations have different patterns. Keepers provide humid planted terrariums, small insects and water-filled bromeliads. It lays eggs, and females carry individual tadpoles to water and feed them unfertilized eggs. Breeding depends on that maternal care, making it more demanding than many common dart frogs.
