Asian Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus silenus)
Heterometrus silenus
Heterometrus silenus is a black forest scorpion from Cambodia, Vietnam and eastern Thailand. Its rectangular carapace and the sides of its abdominal plates are granular and less glossy than those of H. laoticus; its claws are stout and its sting bulb is dark. Much eastern Thai stock once labeled laoticus belongs here, but a trade label alone is unreliable.
Specialist keepers provide a secure, ventilated enclosure, moisture-holding substrate and retreats in humid conditions. Avoid handling. Females bear live young that ride on the mother's back.
