Himalayan Tahr
Hemitragus jemlahicus
The Himalayan tahr is a mountain hoofed mammal from the Himalayas. Males develop a sweeping shaggy shoulder mane and backward-curving horns; females are smaller and less heavily coated. It eats grasses and other alpine plants and bears live young. Zoos and wildlife parks maintain herds with rocky terrain and weather shelters. It is also introduced outside its native range, including New Zealand, where management reflects its effects on native vegetation.
