Hog Deer
Axis porcinus
The hog deer is a low, stocky deer of South and Southeast Asian grasslands, with a brown coat, rounded white-edged ears and small three-tined antlers in males. It ducks through cover rather than leaping high over it. Zoo and breeding collections provide grazing space and sheltered cover; females bear live young. The Indochinese form, Axis porcinus annamiticus, is ESA-listed and in CITES Appendix I. Those protections have a narrower scope than the species as a whole.
