Black Forest Horse
The Black Forest horse is a German coldblood draft breed from the Black Forest region of Baden-Wurttemberg. It is also known as the Black Forest Coldblood or Schwarzwalder Kaltblut, and the traditional color is a rich chestnut, often with a flaxen mane and tail that makes the breed easy to recognize. The frame is muscular without the extreme bulk of some lowland draft breeds, a useful trait for farm work, timber hauling, and travel on steep forest tracks.
Today Black Forest horses are kept for driving, logging demonstrations, leisure riding, and rare-breed conservation. They need the same thoughtful management as other compact draft horses: steady hoof care, harness that fits a broad shoulder, and a forage-based diet that avoids unnecessary weight. German breeding programs have helped preserve type, so buyers outside the region often look closely at papers, height, movement, and whether the horse has the calm, willing temperament expected of the breed.
