Catria Horse
The Catria horse is a rustic Italian mountain horse associated with Monte Catria and the Apennine areas of Marche and neighboring central Italy. It is generally described as a sturdy local saddle and light draft type, shaped by steep pasture, seasonal grazing, and the practical needs of farms that needed a sure-footed horse more than a specialized show animal. Many Catria horses are compact, hardy, and plain-moving, with enough bone and depth to work over rough ground while still being useful under saddle.
People keep Catria horses for trekking, rural riding, local breeding programs, and small-farm work where calm handling and reliable feet matter. Conservation-minded breeders tend to value mares and stallions that still fit the mountain type rather than selecting only for color or size. Buyers should expect a regional Italian breed with limited numbers, so provenance, breeder knowledge, and clear records can matter as much as a polished sales presentation.
