Draft Pony

Draft pony is a practical label for a pony-sized equine with the build and attitude needed for pulling carts, light farm equipment, or small logs. It may describe a recognized pony breed with working roots, a cob type, or a local cross rather than a formal registry breed. These ponies are usually short, broad, and strong through the loin and shoulder, with good bone, sure feet, and an economical way of going. Shetland, Haflinger, Fell, Dales, and other native pony types may be used in this role depending on region and tradition.

The same management principles used for larger driving horses apply at a smaller scale: correctly fitted harness, patient voice training, and work matched to the animal's maturity and condition. Draft ponies are often easy keepers, so grazing and concentrates need watching to reduce obesity and laminitis risk. Their size makes them useful for small farms, youth driving, therapy programs, and tight trails, but they still need regular dental care, hoof trimming, and handling that respects real pulling power.
