Dutch Harness Horse
The Dutch Harness Horse, or Tuigpaard, is a Dutch carriage and show-driving horse bred for an elevated, animated trot in harness. It developed within the Netherlands from Gelderlander, Groningen, and other driving-horse lines, with registry selection emphasizing front, self-carriage, impulsion, and a proud way of going. Compared with many riding warmbloods, the Tuigpaard is more upright in outline and is judged heavily on its performance between the shafts. Bay, chestnut, black, and brown are common colors, though type and movement matter far more than coat.
Most Dutch Harness Horses are kept by experienced driving owners, show stables, and breeders who understand how to develop strength without rushing the joints or back. Training centers on manners in harness, responsiveness to the voice, and fitness for collected, high-energy work. Some individuals cross into ridden sport or pleasure use, but buyers should evaluate temperament and previous handling carefully because a horse bred for action is not always a casual beginner mount. Hoof balance, shoeing, and veterinary checks of hocks and stifles are practical parts of maintaining these expressive movers.
