Dutch Miniature Horse
The Dutch miniature horse is a very small horse-type equine developed in the Netherlands through miniature-horse and small pony breeding, with selection toward balanced proportions rather than simply the lowest height. It is often associated with Dutch miniature registries and height classes, and it may be called a Nederlandse miniatuurpaard in local contexts. Individuals can look refined and horse-like or more pony-like depending on their lines. Many colors occur, and correct legs, bite, movement, and temperament are more meaningful than a tiny measurement alone.
Miniature horses are kept for in-hand showing, companionship, animal-assisted visits, and light driving once mature; they are not riding horses for anything beyond very small children under careful limits. Their management is genuinely equine despite the scale. Rich grass and grain can quickly lead to obesity or laminitis, while small mouths and crowded teeth make dentistry important. Breeders also watch for dwarfism traits and foaling risk in very small mares. Good fencing, safe handling by children, and routine hoof care matter because a miniature horse is still strong, social, and long-lived.
