East Bulgarian
The East Bulgarian is a Bulgarian riding and sport horse developed through organized breeding in eastern Bulgaria. It was shaped from local mares with Thoroughbred, Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, and other riding-horse influence, producing a horse intended for cavalry, sport, and general saddle use rather than heavy draft. The breed is usually described as athletic, medium framed, and suitable for jumping, dressage, eventing, and practical riding.
Modern East Bulgarian horses may be found in sport programs, riding schools, private stables, and conservation-minded breeding groups. Owners should evaluate each horse's training and soundness, since the breed label covers individuals with different levels of athleticism and refinement. Breeders benefit from maintaining performance records and mare-family information, especially when numbers are modest. Practical care is similar to other warmblood-type horses: steady conditioning, good farriery, and turnout that keeps an active riding horse mentally settled.
