Freiberger
The Freiberger, or Franches-Montagnes, is Switzerland's native light draft horse from the Jura region. It was shaped from mountain farm horses and carefully selected outside blood, producing a compact horse with strength, stamina, and a rideable temperament. Modern Freibergers are lighter and more athletic than the older army and farm type, yet they keep the deep body, good bone, and sure feet expected of a working mountain horse. Bay and chestnut are especially common, with black and other solid colors seen less often.
These horses are used for leisure riding, therapeutic programs, family driving, forestry demonstrations, and competitive carriage work. Many are easy keepers, so rich pasture and heavy grain need more restraint than their sturdy appearance suggests. A well-handled Freiberger is usually straightforward, but buyers should still look for sound hooves, a clear training history, and a temperament suited to the intended driver or rider. Swiss breeding includes inspections and performance testing, making papers and import documentation useful when someone wants a true Freiberger rather than a similar small draft cross.
