French Saddle Pony
The French saddle pony, known in France as the Poney Français de Selle, is a sport pony studbook created to produce competitive mounts for children and smaller riders. It draws on French native pony mares and selected Welsh, New Forest, Connemara, Arabian, and sport-horse blood, so individuals can vary in type while still presenting the look of a small riding horse. Most stand within international pony height limits and are bred for show jumping, eventing, dressage, and pony-club work rather than for a single traditional farm role.
Care is much like that of any athletic pony: consistent schooling, regular farriery, and a diet that supports work without pushing excess weight. A talented French saddle pony may be sharp or powerful, so suitability for a young rider depends on training and temperament more than breed name. Competition buyers should confirm height measurements, veterinary soundness, and the pony's record at the level required. Breeders select strongly for canter quality, jumping technique, and rideability, and the best programs keep the pony character without making the animal too small-strided for modern courses.
