Grade Horse
A grade horse is any domestic horse that lacks recognized breed registration, whether because its ancestry is mixed, undocumented, or never submitted to a registry. The category includes many sound, useful animals: ranch horses without papers, backyard-bred saddle horses, rescue horses of uncertain background, and crosses between registered parents from different breeds. Since there is no breed standard, grade horses can be stocky or refined, pony-sized or tall, and may carry almost any coat color or pattern.
Care and management depend on the horse in front of you rather than a pedigree description. A good match depends on honest training information and a soundness exam; for riding horses, saddle fit and hoof quality are also worth checking. Grade horses can be excellent mounts for trails, lessons, local competition, driving, or farm work. When buying, lack of papers should be reflected in price but should not replace a careful soundness check; when breeding, it limits registration options for any foal.
