Hack
Hack is a type and use category rather than a true horse breed. In Britain, Australia, and related show traditions, a hack is a quality light riding horse shown under saddle with polished manners, balanced paces, and a clean outline. In everyday language, a hack can also mean a dependable horse for ordinary riding outside the arena. Hacks may come from Thoroughbred, Arabian, warmblood, riding pony, or mixed breeding, so the label describes presentation and job more than ancestry.
For owners, the important questions are whether the horse is sound, comfortable, and mentally suited to the intended work. A show hack needs calm ring behavior, straight movement, correct turnout, and enough training to carry itself lightly. A pleasure hack may be valued more for traffic sense, trail manners, and an easy canter. Since there is no single hack studbook, buyers should read competition rules carefully and judge the individual horse rather than relying on the word as a guarantee.
