Lithuanian Heavy Draught
The Lithuanian heavy draught is a cold-blooded working horse developed in Lithuania from local mares and heavier European draft influence. It was bred for farm power, hauling, and rural transport, with a broad body, strong bone, calm temperament, and efficient pulling ability. Compared with very massive draft breeds, many Lithuanian heavy draughts are practical agricultural horses rather than exhibition giants.
Today the breed is used in small-scale farming, forestry, driving, tourism, meat production in some contexts, and conservation breeding. Owners should manage body condition carefully, because heavy horses can gain weight while still needing enough nutrition for muscle and work. Sound feet, correctly fitted harness, and slow conditioning are central. For preservation herds, maintaining usable work traits is just as important as keeping the name alive.
