Maremmano
The Maremmano is an Italian horse from the Maremma region of Tuscany and Lazio, historically shaped by marshland, cattle work, cavalry remounts, and the butteri horsemen. It is a sturdy saddle horse with strong legs, a sensible mind, and enough agility for working livestock. Modern lines may show more refinement for sport, but the breed's identity remains tied to practical outdoor work.
Maremmani are used for trail riding, working equitation, ranch work, tourism, and some sport disciplines. Owners should value soundness, stamina, and a steady response to pressure, especially if the horse will work in groups or around cattle. Breeding programs often try to preserve the old rustic character while improving rideability and movement. These horses usually do best with regular turnout and a job that uses both body and mind.
