New Altai
The New Altai is a Russian horse type developed from the native Altai horse with added influence from heavier and more productive breeds. It is associated with the Altai region, where horses are used for riding, pack work, meat, milk, and rural transport. Compared with the older local Altai, the New Altai is generally described as larger and more substantial while retaining hardiness.
Management priorities depend on whether the horse is kept for farm utility, breeding, or saddle use. In its home region, thrift and outdoor durability are important, but heavier animals still need adequate forage, hoof care, and sensible workload. Breeders should balance increased size with the mountain adaptation that makes the Altai type valuable, rather than selecting only for mass.
