Nonius Horse
The Nonius horse is a Hungarian breed developed at the Mezhegyes stud from the stallion Nonius Senior and later selected for harness, cavalry, and agricultural use. It is usually a substantial, dark-colored horse with strong bone, a deep body, and steady movement. The breed sits between heavy riding horse and light draft, with usefulness in both harness and saddle.
Nonius horses are best managed as powerful working horses that need correct conditioning rather than constant speed work. They can suit driving, farm use, traditional sport, and calm riding homes when trained well. Breeders should protect the breed's depth, sound legs, fertility, and reliable temperament, while avoiding heaviness that compromises movement or makes the horse harder to maintain.
