Nordlandshest/ Lyngshest
The Nordlandshest, also called Lyngshest, is a small Norwegian horse from northern Norway. It is hardy, compact, and versatile, shaped by coastal and northern farm life where one horse might be asked to ride, drive, haul, and carry. The dual name reflects regional naming traditions, and modern breeding treats it as an important native Norwegian breed.
Nordlandshest or Lyngshest owners often value the breed for family riding, driving, trekking, and conservation breeding. Its hardiness does not remove the need for careful weight control, hoof care, and training, especially when kept on rich pasture. Breeders should protect the calm temperament, sound legs, and useful size that make the horse practical, while maintaining enough genetic diversity for a small native population.
