Pleven Horse
The Pleven horse is a Bulgarian warmblood type developed around the Pleven region, especially through state stud breeding that combined local mares with riding-horse influences such as Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, Thoroughbred, and Gidran blood. It was bred as a versatile saddle and light harness horse, with enough substance for military and agricultural use but more refinement than a heavy draft. Pleven horses are often associated with chestnut coats, active movement, stamina, and a practical riding temperament.
Today the breed is of interest to sport riders, local breeders, and people working to preserve Bulgaria's equine genetic resources. A Pleven needs the same foundation management as other medium-framed warmbloods: adequate forage, thoughtful conditioning, routine farriery, and training that develops balance rather than rushing strength. Numbers are not large, so buyers should verify identity and breeding records when the breed name matters. For breeding, the challenge is keeping the useful old all-purpose character while selecting for modern riding soundness and trainability.
