Posavina Horse
The Posavina horse, also known as the Croatian Posavac or Posavian horse, is a native cold-blooded horse from the Sava River floodplains of Croatia and nearby lowland areas. It is a compact draft type rather than a giant heavy horse: broad through the chest, deep in the body, strong-legged, and usually steady in temperament. The breed developed on small farms and wet meadows where a horse needed to pull a wagon, work in harness, and move confidently over soft ground.
Modern Posavina horses are kept for native-breed conservation, traditional farm and forestry work, rural tourism, sustainable grazing, and in some regions meat production. Many are managed in outdoor herds on rough forage, but wet pasture makes hoof inspection, parasite control, and adequate dry resting areas important. Breeding programs in Croatia track the Posavac type, so anyone buying for preservation should look for documented stock rather than generic small draft crosses.
