Strelets Arab
The Strelets Arab, more commonly linked with the Streletskaya horse, was a Russian part-Arabian riding horse developed at the Strelets Stud in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was bred from Arabian horses and local or European riding-horse influences to create a larger, more substantial saddle horse that still showed Arabian type. Gray was strongly associated with the line, and the horses were valued for endurance, quality, and presence in military and breeding circles.
The original Strelets horse did not survive as a living breed after the upheavals of the Russian Civil War. A small number of surviving animals, especially the stallions Tsenitel and Tsilindr, became important founders of the Tersk breed. Today the practical relevance of the Strelets Arab is mainly historical and genetic: researchers, pedigree readers, and Tersk breeders may encounter the name when tracing Russian Arabian-influenced sport and riding horse ancestry.
