Sumba and Sumbawa Pony
The Sumba and Sumbawa pony is an Indonesian small horse type from the islands of Sumba and Sumbawa, closely associated with the Sandalwood pony tradition. These ponies developed from local island stock with historical influence from imported horses, often described as including Arabian blood, though the population is shaped as much by climate, terrain, and use as by pedigree. They are generally small, tough, and active, with hard feet, a light riding build, and enough stamina for travel across dry tropical country.
On their home islands, these ponies have been used for riding, pack work, racing, ceremonies, and everyday transport. Management must account for seasonal forage, heat, parasites, and the difference between open-range local conditions and more intensive stabling. Outside Indonesia, the name can cover variable animals with uneven documentation, so buyers should assess size, training, temperament, and health rather than assuming a uniform pony breed. Their small stature makes rider weight and saddle fit especially important.
