Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a record label for a horse whose ancestry has not been verified, not a breed of horse. It may describe a grade horse, an unregistered foal, a rescue with missing papers, or an animal whose appearance suggests several influences. Coat color, height, head shape, and markings can hint at background, but they rarely prove breed. DNA tests may identify broad ancestry, yet many horse populations are not represented well enough to give a firm answer.
Care and placement should be based on the individual horse rather than the empty pedigree box. A pre-purchase or intake exam, age estimate, dental and hoof status, body condition, training history, and temperament tell owners far more than a guessed label. For rescues, sellers, and adopters, clear microchip, vaccination, farrier, and transfer records make future management easier and help the horse keep a reliable identity even without known breed papers.
