Vlaamperd
The Vlaamperd is a South African light harness and riding horse with roots in imported European coach and carriage blood, including Friesian-related influence in many accounts. It is commonly associated with a dark, often black coat, an upright carriage, and a stylish way of moving. The breed was developed for driving, farm transport, and saddle use, then carried forward by breeders who valued presence, tractability, and practical all-around utility.
Vlaamperds are kept for harness work, pleasure driving, riding, showing, and heritage breeding. Their management is ordinary horse management with extra attention to conditioning for driving, correct harness fit, hoof balance, and joint soundness in horses with animated movement. Because the breed is numerically limited, buyers and breeders often care about verified ancestry and thoughtful mating choices. A calm mind is especially valuable, since a driving horse must tolerate traffic, noise, rein contact, and close handling without becoming reactive.
