Pantropical Huntsman Spider
Heteropoda venatoria
The pantropical huntsman spider is a brown, flattened hunter introduced widely through warm regions from its presumed Asian origin. Sideways-held legs have small black spots bearing stiff bristles. Both sexes have a cream face band; females have a tan carapace margin, while males have a dark abdominal stripe.
It hunts insects without a capture web and shelters in narrow crevices. Specialists provide secure, ventilated climbing space, bark retreats and moisture. Avoid handling. Females carry a flattened silk egg sac beneath the body.
