Indian Crested Porcupine
Hystrix indica
The Indian crested porcupine is a large ground rodent of southern and western Asia, with a dark body, long crest and black-and-white banded quills. It shelters in burrows or caves and feeds on roots, fruits and other plant material. Zoo collections provide digging areas and covered dens; females give birth to live young. Quills are defensive structures and are not thrown. It closely resembles the crested porcupine, so geographic identity and documented origin matter.
