Indian Flying Fox
Pteropus medius
The Indian flying fox is a large fruit bat of South Asia, with dark folded wings, a foxlike muzzle and a contrasting pale yellow-brown neck mantle. It roosts in trees and feeds on fruit, flowers and nectar. Zoo keepers provide flight space and multiple roosting sites; females bear live young.
Pteropus medius is the current name. It is generally larger than Lyle's flying fox, but their sizes and coat colors overlap; origin and measured proportions matter for identification. US injurious-wildlife import rules cover Pteropus, and CITES Appendix II regulates international trade.
