India Blue

India Blue is the standard, wild-type color of the Indian peafowl, Pavo cristatus, and the look most people mean when they say peacock. The cock has a metallic blue head and neck, barred wings, and a long train of green-bronze upper tail coverts marked with eyespots; the true tail is the shorter fan of stiff feathers that lifts the train. Hens are mottled brown with a greenish neck and a shorter crest. Domestic India Blue lines may also carry pattern variants such as black-shoulder, pied, silver pied, and white-eyed, where white-eyed refers to the ocelli in the train, not the bird's vision.

India Blues are common because they are vigorous, adaptable, and easier to source than many specialty colors, but they are still large, loud birds with strong roosting and roaming instincts. Farms, estates, zoos, and private keepers use secure night housing or well-planned free range to reduce losses to predators and traffic. Breeding pens should allow the cock to display without damaging his train, and chicks need warm brooder conditions and high-protein starter feed before moving outdoors. Local nuisance and wildlife rules matter where peafowl call loudly or form feral groups.
